What We Do
Located within the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre, we are dedicated to helping you feel clear about your cognitive and brain health and what you can do to support your thinking skills and wellbeing.
For those who are interested and eligible, we encourage you to consider coming through our Healthy Brain Ageing Research Program outlined below. Private consultations can be arranged for those not eligible for our research or who would prefer it.
Our research program
Under the leadership of NHMRC Dementia Leadership Fellow, Professor Sharon Naismith, the Healthy Brain Ageing (HBA) Clinic has been running for 10 years and has contributed significantly to insights into brain ageing in those experiencing memory or mood changes after age 50. It strives to provide an excellent clinical service for all participants, so you know you will come away with information to support you to improve your brain health.
Research relies on strict criteria for inclusion of participants so that the results are scientifically valid. This ensures your time and effort, as well as the valuable research funding that supports our program, is put to good use. Our participants must:
- Be aged 50 or over
- Have excellent English
- Not consume more than 14 standard drinks of alcohol per week or use illicit drugs.
- Not have had any significant head injury, any stroke or have any psychiatric diagnosis other than depression or anxiety.
Please contact our clinic coordinator on 02 9114 4002 for more information about the clinic or your eligibility. Even if you are not eligible for the program, you can still make an appointment to see Dr Ireland privately.
The HBA research assessment does take more time than a private assessment with the specialist, but in addition to a medical assessment you will receive a detailed cognitive, mental health and sleep assessment. Participants generally find this process both valuable and interesting. There are no out of pocket costs for the research clinic and feedback is provided.
Private appointments
If you are ineligible for our HBA clinic, or if you wish to be seen sooner and without the extra time commitment of the research, similar investigations can be arranged privately at the same expert facilities.
