Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment
This may include those with multiple medical diagnoses and medications and/or those with declining cognition or mobility, falls or frailty.
Many older patients with suspected dementia are most appropriately assessed through this comprehensive assessment to enable all health issues to be considered. We can advise upon receipt of your referral.
Geriatricians consider health in a practical way and our assessments aim to establish what your health priorities are and then look at the best ways to support you to achieve this. We warmly invite you to bring family or a person of your choosing to be involved in parts of the appointment.
During your assessment
A comprehensive geriatric assessment generally takes 90 minutes and includes a full review of your health, lifestyle, sleep and medications followed by a physical examination including assessment of your walking, balance and cognitive health. A report is promptly provided to your referring GP. We welcome the opportunity to work with your GP and existing team of health professionals to streamline and coordinate your healthcare in line with your wishes and priorities.
Assessments can be conducted at our clinics in Camperdown and Orange or, distance permitting, in your home. Where appropriate, our Healthy Brain Ageing Clinic research program does accept referrals for comprehensive geriatric assessments, and we are happy to discuss this if you are unsure.

Book an appointment
Bookings require a referral from your doctor. This helps us allocate the right amount of time for your visit and advise on fees. A booking will be made once we receive your referral. Please note, if you are over 65 and wanting the longer comprehensive assessment, your referral needs to be from a GP and not a specialist to be considered eligible for the higher Medicare rebates.
