Cognitive Health Check

It is clearly established that neurodegenerative diseases like dementia are developing for decades before the first signs appear in day-to-day life. A lot is already known about ways to reduce the risk of dementia and research is increasingly focussing on this important time to intervene.

If you have been concerned about changes you have noticed in your cognition, taking a proactive approach can help to clarify if anything serious is going on. For the many patients we see with no serious diagnosis, there is often great relief and a sense of empowerment in understanding how to address the concerns they have and how to lower their risk of cognitive health decline over time. Furthermore, many of these approaches have benefits for health and wellbeing more broadly.

For those with a more serious or concerning diagnosis, there can be enormous value in understanding what is going on, intervening early and developing an active management plan tailored to your needs and goals.

During your assessment

At a cognitive health check, a full history of your concerns will be taken in the context of your general health, sleep, stress levels, lifestyle, medications and supplements. An examination and basic cognitive tests will be undertaken in the same session. Further investigations may include blood tests, scans and sleep studies.

Referral to other health professionals such as a neuropsychologist, psychologist, psychiatrist, exercise physiologist or nutritionist will be discussed if needed. Follow ups and support over time is available and we will work with you and your GP to build an effective team where desired.
